You know that it's possible to ocr images, right?

The moment Google did the alphabet thing in order to preempt ftc breakups, it was over.

I degoogled in 2017 (I run my own Synology cloud now with off-site backup to AWS glacier) and while it wasn't cheap, it was absolutely the best decision.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

It isn't cheap, but it is very rewarding. Twice in the past couple of months have I been able to give family members out so that they don't lose or have to start paying exorbitant amounts.

how's your week going, Beehaw

pretty quiet week this week if you ignore whatever the hell is going on with our bathroom toilet, which has a diagnostic issue we can't troubleshoot and which has flooded once this week. calling maintenance once again to see if we can figure this out so i don't have to plunge every third time we flush (ironically it'd be way...

They are absolutely not cheap, but they are the last pair of headphones you'll ever buy. When you hear the sound quality you'll wonder how you ever lived without them:

I am genuinely horrified to see how much data google collected from me

I created a google takeout and in that zip file I found some files containing a ton of data about me. It has logged every single page I visited while using the google search engine and chrome browser. It even logged every single time I opened an app on my old android phone. It even has VOICE RECORDINGS of me and a log of every...

These apps cannot find addresses in the US. Just a heads up so anyone that sees this doesn't pull their hair out trying to figure it out. No, it isn't you, it's the app.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

"how is that homophobic?" Doesn't mean that someone doesn't care. Depending on inflection it could be an expression of incredulity because they just don't understand.

What would be better in the bottom left would be

scoffs That's not homophobic.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Organic maps can't even handle addresses. How is this useful for driving?

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Not in the US. I have the world map and the los Angeles maps. It is incapable of recognizing any address that I give it

This is the address for the belasco in Los Angeles. It knows the names of the street but not the numbers. Without addresses it's basically useless.

Clicking on any of these results will simply take you to that street at a random location on it.

Latency. Also, wired is always better than wireless. I'll save the long boring explanation for another time, but suffice it to say that wireless constantly has dropped packets, and constantly has to retransmit data.

Wired when you can, wireless when you have to.

We can offer hope instead of fear. The right is steeped in fear, it fuels their entire ideology. If we are able to offer hope, hope is more powerful than fear.

But being the adults in the room we must remember who we are speaking to. We have to converse with them, not at them. If you converse at them, they will simply retreat into the fear bubble because it is familiar, comfortable, and makes them feel safe.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Anger and hope are absolutely compatible, I have no idea why you would even say that.

You can point out and fix the problems of today while offering hope and solutions that lead to a better tomorrow.

I have no idea What kind of weird thought process led you to believe that these concepts are mutually exclusive.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

In the show, Abby is not a cop.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

So you're taking a good premise to an absurd extent. Got it.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Janitors assist cops by keeping precincts.clean, are they bastards? How about the it guys that keep the servers and workstations running, are they bastards?

Hopefully this helps you understand the absurdity of what you are advocating.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

"Acab includes military and people who assist cops"

No, I was abstracting this statement further so that it was clear that "and people who assist cops" was idiotic because it is far too broad.

I have no idea wtf you think you're talking about, but whatever it is it's not on topic. It looks like you were trying to build a straw man.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

This was exactly my thought.

I remember going to Walden books and looking at computer games in the 90s. Those were good times.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Grab a Pyle power conditioner off of Amazon. It'll run you 100 bucks, but you get the benefit of AVR which is more important imo than being able to run while the power is out.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

So ups have AVR (automatic voltage regulation), that is a big part of the selling point. The power that they output is "clean". One of these is basically AVR without the battery.

It's not quite as good as a good ups+AVR, but it's a fuckload cheaper and you don't have to replace the batteries every 6 months.

but I would guess a random 17 char password might be safer than a 5 phrases password

And you would be very wrong about that. A 5 phrase password has entropy. "finance-caffeine-utopia-redress-unseen" is 28 characters. If you add in a different symbol between the words and add a number somewhere, this password becomes incredibly difficult to brute force.

I'll let xkcd explain it better.

Biden "running out" of patience with Bibi as Gaza war hits 100 days (www.axios.com)

As I have repeatedly said... Just because Biden has repeated the US company line of unequivocal support for Israel, etc etc (Because even among democrats it's political suicide to say anything else). That doesn't mean that he hasn't been trying the entire time to get Israel to stop the bullshit. This is more or less a point for...

The aid cannot be on the chopping block. You know why? Because it was guaranteed through Congress until 2028.

Usually these aid bills fly through Congress with 0 fanfare, so it's not shocking that a long term aid package was passed in 2022 or some shit for a bunch of years.

If absolutely necessary I can figure out the dates. But it's years.

All of a sudden everyone seems to know things about foreign policy without actually looking into any of it.

Pummel party is so much fun and if you go in the workshop there are tons of minigames and maps

Why are redditors like this?

I made a post on r/civ (Civilization games subreddit) showing a really funky shaped randomly generated river I saw and most comments were fine but one guy was convinced that I went through the comparatively monumental effort of opening the map editor and changing the river for karma, as opposed to just starting the game and...

Los Angeles is great. Col is high, but wages are generally relatively high as well. Col in the high desert area is much lower.

If you can get a 15$/hr job (minimum wage in CA is 15) and rent a room somewhere nearby for 500 bucks, you can do pretty well for yourself if you budget your money.

YouTube screwing itself with adblockers again

I use Firefox and uBlock Origin. Not sure what kind of experience anyone else is having with YouTube, but recently my home page has been empty because I "don't have watch history turned on". Okay, fine. I won't be able to browse suggested videos, and I'll spend less time on their platform....

And there it is. The dumbest thing I'll read all day.

Let me know when the 2 party stranglehold allows you to vote it out. Until then you'll sit high atop your bullshit mountain preaching on the internet, whining on and on about how things should be.

Meanwhile, completely oblivious that you and people like you are exactly the reason why we don't have enough voting power to enact real change.

You don't even irritate me. I pity you.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Well unlike you suggest, I don't vote blue no matter who, I vote blue because the other choice is demonstrably worse.

You wax eloquent about how things need to change and so you choose to do nothing, but what happens when you recruit enough lefties to your side that the right is able to establish the equivalent of a dictatorship via voter suppression, coups, etc? What then? At that point you are 100% fucked.

Are you one of these idiots who actively want a civil war? Because if so you can give that idea up, it isn't going to happen.

You are the equivalent of an old man yelling at clouds to change their shape.

You say nothing ever changes, but it already has! Biden, while being not nearly the lefty I would like him to be, has done a fantastic job compared to what I expected. It may or may not occur to you that Biden so far has governed much more left that Obama did.

Things do change, they just take time.
